i kinda have a question. It'll probably get deleted. It could have something to do with 3rd gens I suppose or anyother rear wheel drive car in the sense that they don't use them and I don't understand why. If I had a general or a better forum I'd do it there. But since this gets the most traffic I'll ask it anyway. Drifting...serious. What's the legitimacy of this as a motor sport? It's fun. I enjoy doing it on occassion, but seriously is it really a motor sport? I saw it on spike TV or something like that and I was like wtf? They give prizes for that??? I'd ask this on another board if I felt like I could get a good answer from someone other than enthusiasts. But anyway thanks

There's more to cars than going fast. Autocross is an example, a huge engine doesn't mean you'll win. It still takes driver skill and a good suspension. It doesn't entertain me but I have no complaints with it.

I have to agree with the above. However, drift queens or whatever the models are called, are fine with me. They promote my attention span so to speak.
Along those lines, the only *** forsaken reason why I would go to hot import nights is to look at hot import models.

I totally understand a controlled power slide for the sake of racing like autocross or dirt tracks. But to do it for the fun of doing it. I do agree though the women are hot, but it still isn't going to make me buy a honda.

I autocrossed (solo II) my V6 RS with Eibach sportlines this weekend and had a BLAST. I can gurantee I would have been slower with my 88 LB9 car with stock suspension
I grew up doing drifting only we didn't call it drifting- four wheel drifts around curves on unpaved rural roads in clapped out american beaters that my friends owned such as a '72 Maverick or a '74 Impala four door. Twenty plus years later it's become a major spectator event. Who'd a thought?

There's this other sport that's revolved (no pun intended) around going sideways. It's called dirt track sprint cars. They design all the air dams on the cars just for this purpose. It's been around since I can remember.

We have a really nice dirt tract here where they run sprints. Tony Stewart bought it not to long ago actually. I've never been there but hear it's really sweet. It's called Eldora. I've seen them race the Kings Royal on speed vision there.

I still find it funny how most import drifters have to do rwd conversions or only use rx7 to get the appropriate power/weight distribution for sliding around corners.
Dirt track sprints have been around a long time, as long as I can remember, and that sport is still impressive to me.
Maybe it is just the sound of a wound up 4cyl breathing through a 3 foot K&n and out a folgers racing pipe that turns me off.

Yes. The sound of overweight, cut-off jean-short wearing, 26 tooth women screaming at the top of their lungs while being covered with dirt that's flying everywhere is much more appealing.

drifting is to racing as figure skating is to hockey. I think sliding around turns is fun and all, and can be pretty damn scary if you mess up, but its not a sport, because who wins is only an opinion.

At my age group EVERYONE is an import-er aka **** tastic. Being 20 and owning somewhat of a "muscle car" is pretty rare, at least where I am. I know I'm not fast, but I'd rather be slow and surrounded by american iron than drive a 12 second 1/8th mile fart can.
Sliding around turns and stuff, I love it. I use to have posi in my GTA which made it a daily habit. Now I have to find the right "drifting" turn to slide my fat american rear end around.
I just think that more and more people are trying to make sports out of things. As far as I'm concerned, Indy and Nascar. Period.

I don't consider drifting as a motorsport. Just like considering burn out competitions as a sport. Fun yeah, do I do it? yeah. Hell at work when no one's looking I lke to drift the electric tow motor on that smooth concrete floor, but I'm not getting any trophies for it.
