why is it so hard to thread fittings into new intakes? need ideas...

i am in the process of putting a new edelbrock intake on my car. i have put one on before, and i always run into teh problem of the fittings not threading in as easy as i thought they would.

they always seem to be pretty tough to get in. they are the correct fittings as far as threads and size goes, they are just a little tight.

what do you guys think of this? there isnt a tap that i can find anywhere that matches up tho the stupid pipe fitting threads, so "cleaning" the threads first is out of the question. any ideas on how to get all of the fittings in easier? any tricks? have any of you guys had this problem?

thanks for teh info.

buy a pipe tap avaiable at any hardwear or industrial supplier and chase the threads.

Can you get the fittings started or do they start and then just get tight? Pipe threads are what is called interference thread. The thread arent straight they're on a taper. The further you thread something in the tighter it should get. They do this because the threads are actually jamming to create an air or water tight seal. Most pipe threads wont thread in all the way unless they are worn out. Also if you overtighten a pipe thread, because it gets tighter you risk breaking the part your threading into. If you get 4 or 5 threads thats probably enough.

i never considered that you may not know NPT is a tapered thread, like he siad the more fitting you screw in the tighter it gets and it doesn't bottom out like a straight thread would

well, i havent been able to find a tap for the threads that i need..but...now that i know that they arent supposed to go in all the way, i feel a little better. so you guys say that as long as i get 4 or 5 full "rotations" i will be ok? i odnt remember right now, but i dont think that they went in that far..or even close. but i will go grab the intake later on and double check.
