I was wondering about the dependability of a mini starter verses a standard one.

I may need to use one to clear my headers but I'll be using the car as a daily driver so it will be important that it won't let me down.


Any experiences or thoughts are welcome...

 

i have an LT1 starter installed in my car. its been on there for probably 2 years without any problems.

 

My CVR started my Crapiece over the winter time and time again. The cranking ablility was much more than a factory coffee can could ever be.

It turns my 400 over just fine now.

I think this may be the way to go then, I wasn't sure if they were more for the track than every day use.

 

The Summit mini on the 396 gets more use during one day at the track than the Camaro's starter does in a week being driven every day. I've never had a problem with the mini, although I've only had it on for about a year. At least it started it every time needed at Pomona...

 

That makes sense, I was wondering if it was good for street use because some things I've found out are different (like water pumps, brakes, and suspension components) and I had never heard about using them on a daily basis.

I also was told that they can be rewound locally so if they go bad replacement isn't an issue either.

All I use are mini starters. It's not worth the time to change out a neverlast or duracrap starter every year. The last mini starter I purchased was a Tilton super for my trucks new 383. It is a tad larger then the CVR but it's got a 3hp starter motor so I cant complain. BTW these are used on DD.

 

LT-1 starter on my late model 350 has been on for about a year of weekends, no problems (although it needed to be shimmed for proper engagement).

On the early-style block 383 in my Malibu I have a GMPP high torque gear-reduction mini starter. It's been on 3 different engines over a 6 year period and never a problem. It's been baked by the heat coming off of longtube headers for that whole time, without the protection of a heat shield. It's the same starter that comes on the GM 502 and 572 crate motor big blocks, by the way. It's damned near bulletproof.

 

That gets a big fat AMEN!!! I think you could go as far as more use before noon than a typical starter sees in a week....at least with mine it was turning over higher compression than stock also....and never a hiccup in 2 years.

Many of the guys at the track are now starting to use the mini's off the new HD trucks, guess they bolt right up and are alot cheaper. Dont know the exact details abour year/type of trucks, but buddies new AC Delco went out between rounds and racer came to the rescue with this weird looking starter-mini-but different looking than what i'm used to seeing in racing applications. Bolted in on his BBC and it's been on all year long.
