tech question about new rims. safe to run cheap rims on the street?
Ok, my ultimate cream-dream rims are the American Racing Torque Thrust "D"'s, but at 189 a pop for the size I want, I simply can't afford it, and won't be able to until I graduate from college (in about 5 years)...
So I'm thinking of getting some cheapos so I can mount some good rubber and keep me from killing myself...
I've decided on the U.S. Wheel 26 series rims. 15*8's. At 48 bucks a pop, it isn't nearly as bad.
My question is, is there an advantage to spending 190 on a single rim? Are the U.S. Wheel's going to fall apart on me? Collapse? I just want a cheap good looking rim. 14*6's s*ck!!!

I would think that if they are a brand name rim they would have to meet gov't standards. I can't imagine you having a problem with them unless they are obviously poorly made when you look at them. I have seen chrome steel wheels in that price range around and they looked fine. I'm sure there's a difference in the plating quality but if it's short term till you get out of school why not do it.

The rims should work just fine..
Actually, i was able to find a set of 98 TA wheels, with good rubber for 250bucks for the tires and wheels!
If you keep your eyes open i'm sure you can find something.
