Anybody familiar with the AC system? (Evacuation)

I'm in the process of pulling a 3.1 liter out of a 91 Firebird and need to get the air conditioning out of the way before I go any further. I wouldn't mind paying someone to evacuate it but the problem is that it doesn't run and it's at my house. Is evacuation the system something I could do myself? *(without killing myself)* I really don't want to just let that stuff leak into the atomsphere either. So, I'm open to any suggestions. Thanks.

I would also like to remove my AC system myself but I dont want to do something wrong. The AC doesn't work well and it just takes up beloved engine bay space so I'm yanking it. How do I evac. the system? I know its bad for the atmosphere butI doubt there much left in it anyway after 12 years of never being charged.. lol
Thanks
