Where is the oil pump on 91Z?

I think it may have gone bad on me. Also what drives it is it belt driven or something else. The problem started 2 days ago I noticed my guage would drop from full to lower oil pressures so I take it in and get the oil changed. I thought this would fix it. But now when I stop sometimes my oil pressure will go all the way to 0. I know this isn't good. Even when I am driving the oil pressure isn't what it should be. What should I check guys? I try not to let the car get fully warmed up because that makes the pressure fall but I have to drive the car it is my only one. Any help is greatly appreciated. And you guys rock.

91,

The oil pump is bolted to the bottom side of the rear main bearing cap, and is driven by an extension shaft that is connected to the distributor.

If the pressure is low, there should be other signs, like noisy rockers.

It is possible that the pressure transducer has failed, and the oil pressure is actually O.K. even though the dash instrument doesn't indicate correctly. This is a fairly common problem. Check the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge connected to the port where the sensor is mounted. If the mechanical gauge agrees with the dash gauge, you have an oil pressure problem. My guess is that the sensor is about toasted.

The SBC oiling system is pretty reliable, and unless you have eleventy-jillion miles on your engine, it isn't likely that the oil pump is worn out. It is possible to have a restricted intake screen, or oil starvation from a loose oil pickup tube, but that isn't very common either.

I agree with Vader, the sending unit is most likely the problem; but I find it easier to just put a new one in thatn to fool around with a mechanical gauge. The sender is less than $20, and can be replaced in a couple of minutes.

Thanks Vader I am going to call the place that changed my oil and see if they can hook it up to a mechanical guage to see if the sensor is bad. They had a new guy working on my car so I think I can talk them into it. Once again thanks Vader and RB83L69.
