Unplug the ecm...fires right up,minutes later it won't start and floods...any ideas?
Thanks everyone for the previous help with an oil pressure, starting problem. Here is where my situation is...any help is greatly appreciated!
It's an 89' IROC with the 305 TPI/700r4.I have had a problem starting the car.If I hold my foot down the car will fire up but barely. It won't idle without help and knocks, smokes because of the excess fuel I gave it when cranking.I have changed the oil and filter, checked timing, and replaced the plugs. Im getting no codes from the ecm.
I picked up another ecm at the local yard(1227165)just to try. After unplugging the battery, popping my calpack in it and installing the new ecm,the car fired up right away. The ses loght came on and gives me a code 15(cts).I'm sure the ecm is the same, but I didn't get a code 15 from the original ecm. After shutting it down,I try to restart a few minutes later and the same old problem is back-it won't start with a heavy fuel smell from continuous cranking of the engine I suppose.
It seems if I clear the computer and pull the pack it will start and run relatively good, otherwise on the second attempt I'm getting a no-start situation with too much fuel dumping. Any ideas??

first thing I'd do is check the coolant temp sensor using a scanner. then I'd check the TPS and MAF readings. Check the fuel pressure too.

Funny, yet I can relate... When I reset my computer (via battery unhook) and then start the car and drive it, it pulls like a motha.
But when I turn it off after 20 minutes (supposed BL time expiration) and then try to restart... it's my same 2.8L engine again...
And no, I don't have a clue as to why it does this. You're best bet is to scan sensor outputs, and check the wiring for them. If you don't have a scanner, throw a CTS and O2 at it and see what happens...
Good luck.

I think I'll start with a new cts and o2 sensors. I'm sure they are not the problem, but a definate way to rule those 2 out.
Thanks-I'll post results, any other ideas welcomed...

I replaced the o2 and cts,but didn't cure the problem.I understand that clearing the computer codes will reset the ecm to "limp mode" timing wise, but why won't either ecm I have learn? The car won't start on the second try...this is bizarre to say the least!
