Hello fellow Third Gen Members,
My Car started making that belt squeal about 5 days ago and I dismissed it because it has been raining a lot here. I checked under the hood today and noticed one of the belts has in a sense spun to the wrong side and this is causing the squeal. What could have caused this problem? The belt is still tight and there are no other problems that I am experiencing, any clues?

Are you saying that a v belt has turned itself 180*. If thats the case it was too loose to begin with.

I would change the belt and check the tensioner.

Moving to Tech/general engine.

my dad had a problem with this on a van that used dual V-belts to power a second driveshaft for a machine inside the van. as it turned out, the main crank pulley was worn out. there were actually worn grooves inside each V that kept cutting into the belt, then flipping it. check to make sure that all your pulleys are in decent condition. it will be pretty obvious if they aren't.

Ok, I did a complete tune up today and after looking at the belt it was no turned. The belt is a v belt but it has the grooves on the outside which threw me off. It seems tight but I am still getting a squeal for about 10 seconds until the motor is a little warm. I am sure this is driving the neighbors as well as myself crazy so I have to figure where that squeal is coming from. By the way the belt is for the power steering pump.

I had a belt squeal problem once... I found a little trick here on the board that might help.

When pullies get old, the gooves get 'polished' smooth by the belts. Sometimes just this can cause a belt squeal. The fix I found was to start the engine, and let it idle, and...

**VERY CAREFULLY**

...take a peice of sandpaper and gently touch it to the inside of the groove of the pulley while its spinning. This will scuff up the metal, making the belt grip it better.
