Spripped Crank!!!
Okay okay, i know i know you cannot put a harm balancer on with just the bolt. I knocked it in as much as i could and I spripped it.
I tapped it out and got a new bolt. Still IFFY.
Now I need a fix that will last a year and it doesnt have to be removable. This engine is only a mock up and I refuse to replace the crank.
Weld the bolt on? JB weld i dont care it has to work though. for atleast a year.

if it's just a mock up i wouldn't worry about it at all. if you want a more permanate fix try a thread insert or going 1 size bigger, or next size bigger you can find a grade 8 bolt for.

Heli-Coil it.
JB weld will not hold.
Tapping the threads will not hold. Think about it.... you pulled the threads out; how can you "create" more metal back where you stripped it from, with a cutting tool?
Ever seen what happens to water pumps, alternators, radiators, etc. when a balancer comes off? Better yet, ever had to pay the bill?
Don't half-*** it. Heli-Coil is cheap and easy, and better than the original threads.
Then get yourself one of these http://store.summitracing.com/partde...art=CCA%2D4920 or the like from a parts store (I think even AutoZone has them), or make yourself one from some all-thread and a nut and a stack of thick heavy large OD washers, so you don't do it again.
{edit}hmmm.... that didn't do quite what I thought it would.... link says part # CCA-4920, window that pops up is something completely else..... look up part # CCA-4920

I never heard of this stuff it sounds good by reading the site. Can anyone tell me exactly what to order? I am not very good at determining screw sizes, and a brief description on how to install it. Thanks!

i had a similar problem, but it was in the motor i was gonna use. i took it back to the machine shop, and they drilled the hole larger and tapped for a larger bolt.
but i agree, heli-coils are a great way to fix it quick and easy. way easier than the way i went about it.

What you need is a 7/16-20 heli-coil in the end of the crank. You may have to buy an heli coil set in that thread size but you don't have to take the engine apart and have the crank re worked to fix it.

Yeah well, my airstation actually had some helicoil kits since we use it for the helicopters we work on. I was silly enough to use 7/16 14 instead of 20 but after retapping for 14 instead of 20 everything works good as new. Its funny really because the machine shop I called before you guys never even suggested this stuff. they said new crank, and that wasnt an option after the trouble i went through already.

They'd make a lot more money selling you a new crank and rebalancing than they would from putting a helicoil in.
