Are these good mods for this Engine?
Hi there this is like my Second post so im relitively new to the board
What i would like to know if im on the right track here with my mods and future mods? Right now im running the stock 305 TPI in a 86 iroc with an auto trans and limited slip rear end. SO far i have rmoved the baffels from the airbox, gutted the screens from the MAF, and im in the process for adding headers, cat and hooker cat back. One thing i would like to know is what are the best headers out there for my car..i plan on swaping in a 350 or possibley the old 327 i have in storage..so i don't want somthing that good for the 305 and for the other motors. Second(and this might seems funny) but will the TPI work on the 327? i would think so. Also i plan on porting the TPI( TB, runners, etc) for better flow..anything else you guys could tell me would help alot. Thanks

As far as headers go, id have to say SLP's, bottom line. There a little on the expensive side ($400 plus accessories to make it work for your application, which ever that may be), but consideriing the fact that they are stainless steel (i think jet hot ceramic coated too, not sure though), there just about the best when complying with emissions. Since your probably doing motor swaps, these headers will switch back and forth, no sweat. as far as the 327 goes for the tpi, not sure, but i don't see why it shouldn't work. id probably go with the 350 though.
ok...best headers, smog legal, in my opinion are the SLP's. Get the 1 5/8" for the 305. Lingenfelter recommends 1 5/8 for 350s too, though most people think 1 3/4 is better. but he's a great engine builder so it's your choice. I'd say go 1 5/8 and they will be just fine for 305, 327, 350... The TPI system will work on a 327, no problems there. you may need a new prom though(computer chip). porting is one of the best free mods you can do, but make sure you do it with the parts off the engine and clean them of all the metal shavings before putting them back on.

Thanks for your imput
the main reson im wanting to gow with the 327 is that i have almost a complete engine that just needs to be machined and cleaned up..and from what i have been told the 327 isa sweet engine. Thanks again for the input

Hmm.....I'm confused. I've been told that 327's are really rev happy and usually have a high redline....and that the TPI systems have breathing problems basically above 4500. Now, considering I'm not going from personal experience, nor am I any type of mechanic....can someone explain to me what would be an advantage of a TPI 327?
NOTE: I honestly do not mean for you to take this as a flame, just wondering.

Dudes, it the total package, not the bore/stroke!
A 327 can be made to pull stumps with a small cam and heads, or rip your ears off as it winds out with a big cam and heads. It will work fine with a TPI if the cam and heads are well matched to it.
Shorter runners and the porting you mention will get you in the 5500 rpm range easily. Just get a cam and heads to match.
And, SLP's are not coated unless you pay more to get it done. Lingenfelter's recommendations are for long-tube headers, not shorties. If running a 327/350 with SLP's, follow their recommendations and get 1-3/4" primaries. You can put them on your 305 now and just lose a little low-end torque, but it won't kill you and you'll have them when you put in the bigger engine.
