Holy cow, so THAT's how a 305 is supposed to run!

After planning, researching, reading these boards almost daily, and collecting parts for the past year and a half, I finally drove the Camaro with the mods in the sig for the first time this evening.

Holy cow!

I don't know where to begin. The LG4 had 143,600 on the odometer when I drained the radiator back on November 2nd. Simply runs great. Street, stop & go, freeway, cold and hot starting, etc., appears mild mannered but just a bit of a growl. Idles at 550 rpm as smoothly as the LG4 did. No SES light (yes, the bulb works!). No exhaust fumes like before. No smoke with warm start-up anymore.

But get on it a bit - hang on! I haven't pushed it too hard yet (hey, this was just my first test drive), but it certainly is a lot happier at 5 grand than it ever was before! At least coming off a stop light, I'm sure it would leave the '57 in the dust (and I've been driving the '57 the past two weeks while I've been working on the Camaro, so I should know). No pinging (but I've got premium in the tank right now - burned regular normally with the LG4).

Yes, it would be faster with a 350. But, I maintain, not for the same money I've got in this combo. And, notice it's a daily driver, even in the snow (we'll see if it does as well in those conditions as it did last winter).

So, long post - sorry; will be about 6 months before I can get it out to Bandimere and document the improvement. But, this is one happy 305 camper!

Wow, that is great to hear! Do you think it will beat the 57 in the quarter, too?

As far as I can see, your setup is only a cam and heads different than mine. Which gets me thinking ...

Sorry, Matt, but when you're supporting 5 on one income, the toy has to have practical purposes as well.

Bull, I'm CC carb, which I'm sure makes a difference (for the good) when it comes to driveability. The match race with the '57 will have to wait until next spring.

Forgot to mention: DR rods on B hanger. JC Whitney chip in the ECM (if you can believe that). Only adjustment I made to the carb was the idle speed.

Sounds good. I LOVE working on low output "smogger" motors becuase it's relatively easy to draw a bunch more power out of them. They have so much left in them.

Very satisfying to work on. You get lots of "seat of the pants" improvement that you don't need a dyno to tell you it runs a lot stronger!
