Could be worn valve guides/seals, the rings didnt seat, intake manifold didnt seal well.

If the intake manifold didnt seal well, wouldnt the engine idle bad?I have thougt at my valve seals and /or my piston rings that something could have happened when i put the engine together..Seems like the engine runs like a stock tpi would..oil pressure is a little low maybe? 18 psi at idle 500 rpm hot and at 50 miles in fourth gear(th700) 1400rpm ca 35 psi..42 psi at the same speed in third gear...

How was the engine broken in?

Do you have access to a compression or a leak down tester? Vacuum gauge?

When I had my engine broken in I ran it wery fine for about 100 miles before I tryed to put the "petal to the metal" The engine did not smoke so much in the beginning i think,It seems like it smokes more now after ca 400 miles on it.. I am also using valvoline racing oil 20/50. When I am using a leak down tester, should the engine be hot or cold?
