correct timing for performance
i just installed a 383 into my 85 T/A I'm setting the timing and want to know what the best timing setting for this application.

Engine: 305 TPI
Transmission: 4L60
Axle/Gears: 14 bolt with 3.07 gears
We need alot more information about your engine to give you a good starting point. Most Small Block Chevy engines like between 32* and 36* on pump gas. Under cruise conditions with vacuum advance connected it needs to go up to about 48*.
