headers are buring me up

Any one with an idea on how I can stop from buring up wires. I have burned three plug wires, three wires that go to my emmison crap and about half for all the plastic covers off all the rest of the wiring. I have done the best I can to route what I can away from them but for the most part there is not enough wire length or a place to route them any further. Help me before my headers do something that I cant fix. thanks

whatever you do, do NOT make a homemade heat shield out of aluminum foil. thats how you send a few thousand volts through the chassis and, unfortunately, your arm, if it happens to be within arcing distance

The headers shouldnt be hot enough to burn stuff up a distance. Are they glowing? Also, do you have a working air dam? Hows the timing?

Ive never had trouble even with my wires running very close to the headers. Teh aluminum heat sheilds do work. Ive made them out of thin gauge aluminum sheet metal, but i found that I didnt need them once I fixed what was causing the headers to heat up. As for shocking you, if the wires not leaking, itll never be a problem. If it is leaking, then your probably gonna get shocked no matter what if your hand is nearby.

My headers arent glowing they are real hot though. I do have wire looms and were they are is not a problem. Its were I have to go by the pipes to plug in that I am buring them. I am also buring the wires going to my sensors and what not. My timing is off a little and I plained on getting to it but I keep getting side track fixing the burns. When I said off a little I mean a little. It is very close but I have a slight hesatation at start. So dont run with the off timing thing. I dont think thats the problem. Heat shields would be nice but I would almost cover both sides of the motor to get the job done. I thought some one would have had the same problem and had a fix.

Exactly how much space is there between whatever part of the spark plug wires you are burning and the exhaust headers? Summit Racing sells varous types of spark plug boot heat protectors. Maybe you should look into a set of those.

Just get longer plug wires. Route wires under the headers and you're good to go.

And that whole thing about getting shocked by aluminum foil is BS. You'd need to have the car running, and then it'd have to touch the inside of the wire, THEN make clean enough that the resistance through your body to the chassis is less resistance than each spark plug.

If I were to cut and replace some of my sensor wires that have burned will the new resistance that I make with a cut wire affect the sensor and send codes? Any body know what I am taking about?

The resistance of the wire won't affect the sensors as long as you have a clean crimp (or solder) connection. I use teflon coated wire that can resist the head of headers for a while if they happen to brush against each other.

if your timing is close and your headers are hot, in general, that means you are running pretty lean. on the flip side, running rich will cause your catalitic converter to heat up.

BTW, when i zapped myself, it was probably due to the hack job wiring harness in a car that is long gone. They actually make aluminum plug covers for your wires. I had a few in a truck that kept burning plug wires at the plug.
