How about this cam

Is this cam is too big for my 305? I've got hooker headers and exhaust, edelbrock preformer intake, and a 500 cfm carb (yes i know i need a larger one maybe 600 cfm?)

It's a Lunati 07103 cam.
Adv. Duration is 295/295
lift is .534"/.534"
2500-6500 rpm

Would I need a better intake to match this thing or is it just plain to friggin big?

BTW, here is the scoop, I'm giving the guy a toolbox for a truck that cost 550 new. I figure it's worth 400 now, it's still in great condition. He has a bunch of stuff.

Lunati cam
Heads (just GM ones but maybe vortecs?)
600 cfm edelbrock
holley red electric fuel pump
rod/pistons

I was thinking I could maybe get the heads and cam for starters. Maybe I could get the bigger carb later.

Well, in theory, what would happen if I put that in my car?

Under factory heads, it will (there is no maybe) screw your valve train over completely when youf retainers slam into your valve guides and bind your valve train. Bend pushrods, possibly flatten some cam lobes, et al. It won't survive cam break in.

You forgot to mention that it wouldn't idle under 1200-1300 RPM also...Be a good cam for the track though.

And won't make power until 4000rpms, but your Performer intake won't like that.

Look for a smaller cam, like 210/220 duration or so with less than .480 lift. Personally, I like the XE262 cam, 212/218 duration with lift safe for stock heads. That'd be a good cam for a carbed 305.

EDIT: Actually I think the specs I mentioned are the XE256 cam. The XE262 is 218/224 I think.

True, but why bother mentioning the idle when it won't live to see the day? Unless it's built properly. But if it's built properly, that defeats the purpose of the thread...

you'd need to re-do the heads if you want to use that cam. (aside from it not working well with the intake and carb that is...).
You'd need head machining, basically all new valve train (springs, etc. ).
I think the compx268 is a good cam, but will also need head machining. If you want to keep your heads stock, keep a close to stock cam, like the 256 that was mentioned.

This is a street car? (not pure race right?) Look for a cam that matches the powerband you drive in now, ie. a powerband advertised at starting at 2500 is pretty freakin' high...

I think the XE268 is a bit too big for a 305. I use it in my LT1 and love it in there. I'd stick with an XE256 or XE262 cam. Those should both work well. 256 will give you more low-end torque, while the 262 will give you a bit more pull up top.

I just wanted to know if it would go in.. Clearly it's to big, so it's not going then, but then the curiousity got turning and I wanted to know what would happen if I put it in lol. I think I'm gonna trade the guy my box plus cash on a 412 small block. I'll get pics when I get it. (If everything is what it should be )
