Yeah, I don't remember which way I put mine in either. I *think* I put the chamfered side up. Made more sense to me at the time. Something about spreading the load out a bit more even on the surface of the head. I don't think it really matters which way you go.

The way it was explained to me is that the chamfer goes up, because there's a slight radius under the bolt head and if the sharp edge of the washer is up, it could interfere with the radius under the head of the bolt. Possibly score it as well, causing the head to develop a fracture.

The portion of the bolt where teh shank meets the head is radiused to lessen the stress concentration there. Having the washer the wrong way negates this if its resting right on the radius.

On a side note Id probably forget and put them on the wrong way as well. Luckily I have iron heads so I didnt need them.

tht's shi**y I put them on last night with the bevel facing down. I have iron heads, should I spend the time to flip them. If so the gaskets can be reused. thanks for the replies

You don't want them on the wrong way around. Either remove them completely (not necessary for cast iron heads) or flip them over the right way.

just asking while we are on this subject. if you have some washers facing up and some down, wouldn't when you torque the heads that the torque reading be different?not sure if this is a stupid question.. or understand what i mean

If you remove the bolts one at a time and flip the washers over it ought to be OK, providing your block is drained of coolant.
Some head bolts are different lengths to accomodate washers. In some cases, the bolt threads might stop before the bolt head contacts the head if you remove the washer.
That's something to check if you're going to take out the washers.
Don't forget to put new thread sealant on there too.
