Need help reading my cam numbers
I put this cam in my engine when I rebuilt it. The person that I bought my engine set from recommended this one. My problem is that I don't know how to read the numbers to see what kind of cam it is. People always ask what cam it is and the only thing I know is that it is a high performance street cam.
Here's the numbers:
Cam Lift: .311 (int) .325 (exh)
Valve Lift: .467 (int) .488 (exh)
Lobe Center: 107 (int) 117 (exh)
SAE Duration: 298 (int) 304 (exh)
.050 Duration: 224 (int) 234 (exh)
What do I tell people?
Is this the right cam for my set-up?
The car runs great, nice and lumpy at an idle.
I just hope my carburator is big enough, I noticed alot of people with 700cfm's or bigger.

It's a pretty healthy cam. The "valve lift" and ".050 duration" numbers are typically what are quoted to describe a cam. Yours is called "dual pattern" because the intake and exhaust have different lift and duration.
The lift is probably beyond the durability limit of the stock Vortec press-in rocker studs. You might want to consider getting them machined for screw-in, and get upgraded springs as well.
What do you have for exhaust? With decent headers and everything on back, I'd think your 600 cfm carb is holding you back. But, probably not a whole lot.

Thanks for your reply. I was a little nervous about the lift being to much for the Vortec. No problems yet.
Right now my exhaust is stock. I have to change the manifolds soon because I can't get to my dipstick. You don't want to know how I check my oil.

I know how he checks the oil. He watches the oil pressure gauge! j/k

Lets just say I do watch my Oil Pressure guage and I change my oil very often to be safe.
I had to rig a dipstick tube because of the 1974 block. The hole is on the drivers side so I had to heat and bend the tube to fit by the manifold. I bent it to much and the stick would not fit. I filled my car with 6 quarts, found a thin cable that will fit down the tube and marked it. Now you know, I am not proud of this.
