The shop doesn't know

I took my car into a repair shop for the transmisson.

They put a used tranny in it.

It still has shifting problems.

When the car warms up and at full throttle it will not shift into third gear.

They have had my car fo two weeks and they cant figure it out.

I think all i need is a tranny cooler.

The shop thinks it is the linkage.

what do you think?

They put a used ie worn out tranny in your car. Needs to be pulled and replaced with a new one. They can mess with the linkage till the cows come home, won't fix it. Takes all of 5 minutes to set the linkage. Cooler won't help at this point, should still work right without it. The stock one on the side of the rad is connected right? Aftermarket cooler would just make it live longer assuming you start out with a good trans.

Very common problem with the TH700 transmission. Typically a worn 3-4 clutch pack, or one put together with too much clearance. Often happens after the torque converter clutch has not been operating, and excessive heat build-up cooks the 3-4 clutch disks.

You need another transmission, or this one needs to be rebuilt.

Of course, all of this assumes the TV cable is properly adjusted, which is part of the 5-minute adjustments Half mentioned. If it was improperly adjusted and driven that way, see paragraphs 1 & 2.

No, it is different. Before it would not shift at all into second.

I have already adjusted the throttle valve cable.

That didnt do anything. I tell him what you guys said.

Tell them to ask a tranny shop. Not what their own ignorant minds have made up.

Don't let him move it till he fixes it. You paid for a working car and don't have one. Have him replace the defective tranny he bought. He should know better, you shouldn't have to ask. In this case, he's just trying to dump you.

Your first clue is when he said "he wants to get it out of his shop". If it's not a trans. shop, they're just an R&R garage! The trans should be garanteed to the point that if it does'nt work you should be able to exchange it for another. It sounds to me like their trying to get out of replacing it and absorbing the labor cost to do it again. If they had done it right, a test drive would have shown that it wasn't working right, and you wouldn't have got the car back till it was. If they give you a bunch of lip about it SUE THEM! You can win in small claims for 10 bucks!

Good deal! glad to hear all is good. I'm fixing to put a used steering box on my 88 form. tomorrow. I went to a wrecking yard that had boxes already pulled and they tried to BS me into buying a standard (3.5 turn lock to lock) for 50 bucks. When I first tried to tell them I needed one for my WS-6 form. they acted like they didn't know what I was talking about. I ended up finding one at a u-pull-it yard for 15 bucks and it only took 25 min to get it out!
not a bad price for a quick ratio 2.5 lock to lock huh?

Thats awesome, some junk yards try to jiff people. I've been to quite a few and some times they over price stuff. I have been having problems finding firebirds with good parts on them.
Every junk yard i've been to crushes them.
