Why does oil light come on?

Driving along for a while. Little oil light starts to flicker at stop light. This is after driving for about 10min. Still driving down the road. Stop again, light stays on till I accel. Put car in Neu. oil light flickers. When I'm stopped I push brake down. Then press accel then light goes away. Does anyone know.

I'd put a gauge on it. Sounds like your pressure is dropping really low at idle.

I have mine where the sending unit was. It's to the left of the distributor on the back side of the top of the block. The gauge it self it mounted under the dash to the right of the steering wheel. Make sure the installation is clean, ie., no pinched lines and everything tied up nice and tidy. You don't want the hose to the gauge springing a leak all over the inside of your car.

did you check the oil level in the engine. it could be that or the pickup has moved so far up that it is not picking up oil from the pan over time they can do this. it could also be a oil pump on its way out if the preasure is droping at idle.

Just swap the sending unit, it's about $5 and is a tiny fraction of the trouble of hooking up an additional gauge.

If it still does it, then you probably do really have low oil pressure. Oil pumps rarely go bad. More likely the engine bearings are worn out.

I think the sending unit is a great idea to see if maybe it is going bad and not hard to change
