Catalytic Converter problem
Catalytic Converter problem
My car has been down on power, sucking gas like there is no tomorrow, overheating, and backfiring like mad lately. I finally traced the problem back to the CAT. There is an air line (I think that it may recirculate exhaust) that comes off of the CAT and connects to the engine somewhere. Well, this line is broken on my car. The little elbow like piece that comes out of the CAT is not broken, it is further up the line. Now, I need a way to fix/replace it. Has anyone ever had to do anything like this? Who would sell the entire line? I thought about finding some tubing that I could slip over both of the broken ends and clamping it down, but then I worry that it will cause the line to break somewhere else. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Sorry, but that broken line has absolutely nothing to do with your poor running. Thats an AIR injection line into your cat. You can fix it the way you described by simply putting a hose over it asnd clamping it down. If it's broken really close to the cat you'll need to use green hose. If not, any old heater hose should be fine.
BUt like i said, this has nothing to do with how your car is running.

Okay, the air pipe was only a fraction of the problem. The damn CAT was clogged. Tore that sucker off, cleaned it out and slapped it back on - problem solved! How does that CAT get clogged? Is my engine running like crap and I just don't know it? When I first got the car, I gutted the CAT. Then emission time came around and I had to replace it. Now it gets clogged again. What is the deal?
if im too poor to afford a new cat right now, can i weld a piece of tube there, and then do what with the air tube until im ready to purchase my high flow catco???
thanx

You should be able to get some rubber hose to conect both ends of your broken tube.
Assuming you didn't remove any emissions stuff that tube allows air from the AIR pump to go to your cat in order to help burn exhaust gases. Not enough air...unburned exhaust...eventually clogged cat. Make sure your AIR diverter valve is working (just follow the tube back to the engine).
If everything works, put the cat back on, check/replace your O2 sensor, get a tune-up if its been awhile, and you should be fine.
This is assuming emissions are an issue.
