ignition module woes..

Ok, so a couple of nights ago, my 92 Z28 went through it's 3rd ignition module in about 2+years. So now, I'm on my fourth.

Has anyone else had any problems with ignition modules? Any tips/hints as to how or why this is happening to me?

I have the MSD cap/rotor/coil/6AL/wires.

The distributor is probably still the original one on there, so maybe the pickup coil is faulty? I can't think of anything else..

thanks!

It sounds like you have a short in your ignition system somewhere and that is ruining your modules. but make sure you test to see if the modules are actually bad. I did the same thing -- switching modules until I found that they werent actually going bad and that I was just disturbing the short every time I changed it. now I have 3 working modules.
(but I still really havent found all my electrical shorts!)
good luck!

I check to see if I connected the output of the HEI module to the right input wire on the MSD6al. If connected wrong the 6AL could be drawing too much current through your
HEI module, causing early failure.

The heat sink grease is also important. Are you using it?

The 6AL is hooked up properly. I bought the MSD install kit that's dummy proof.

I do try to use every bit of the white grease that comes with it. Unless if the MSD is causing more stress/heat to the ignition module, because I heard that with an aftermarket ignition, things start to run a lot hotter... if so, should I just apply extra dielectric grease?

also, how would I check for a short? I guess I should get those modules tested out first..

thanks guys

Just inspect the wiring to make sure its not grounding to metal, except the ground of course. On older styles a bad ground to the coil would fry modules on a regular basis. I'd be checking that out.
