Snag it. Do the work you say. Make sure it needs boring before you just do it. Anything over .030" should have a sonic verification done before starting.
It's probably worth more than he's asking if in rebuildable shape.

That is an AWSOME deal, although you dont really need the tranny. Make sure you do a few things before you go and start building it:
1) MAKE A BUDGET! - My 406 project is running over the 5k mark, and climbing
2) You will need a new a new tranny, cause a 400 making good power will kill your stock 700R4
3) You will also probably need a new rear end, cause a 400 making good power will kill your stocker in no time if you plan on launching hard.
4) You will need new heads, new cam, and a new intake (unless you already have soem of this stuff). The stock heads/cam were made to be smog friendly. I dont have the exact specs, but I have heard from NUMEROUS people that the stock 400 heads kinda bite.
5) If you plan on converting this block to a hydraulic roller cam, you will need to buy conversion type lifters. They are a lot more expensive than regualr hyd. roller lifters. SpeedPro makes them, and I am sure other companies do too.
6) The 400 is EXTERNALLY ballanced, meaning you have to buy a special crankshaft and a special ballancer. The crank isnt any more expensive than a normal one, but he ballancer is.
7) 400 SBC engines come with either 2 or 4 bolt mains, you want one with 2 bolt mains. The 4 bolt block were actually weaker because the hole went straight into the block webbing. If you want 4 bolt mains, get a splayed 4 bolt system from Miloden.
8)The dipstick is on the DRIVERS SIDE. If you plan on buying an oil pan for it, make sure you specify that, I didnt and now I gotta sell the oil pan
9) The heads have to have steam holes drilled in them. The 400 SBC used steam holes in the block to cool the heads. This causes overheating probs for some people, so make sure your cooling system is up to the task.
10) I forget the exact reason why, but many people have told me that if you go with 6" rods (as opposed to 5.7") they will be safer and less prone to failure. If you get 6" rods, you will need to use special pistons with the pin located higher up the skirt.
That is everything I can think of off the top of my head. I did lots of digging to find that info when I first started building my engine. You may want to try searching the archives of the "Classic Tech" section over at Camaroz28.com. There were a few HUGE posts about the 400 SB over there, and they had GOBS of awsome information in them. If I can find them, I'll post a link. Good luck man!

ok, thanks
does anyone know the stroke and bore of the engine, can i get a stroke kit, boost it to a 426 or 427, or is that undoable, also how mush does boring usually cost, and i read something about acid dipping, what is that? and how much, thanks

Id still jump it and get it all for $300. Around here, all the 400 blocks I've seen are going for $300 plus and theres no gauruntee on condition of the thing. Im sure you could make $300 off a Turbo 350/400 and Im guessing a 12 bolt.
