LG4->L69?

Hey guys, my daily driver 86 LG4 305 Camaro needs a little boost. I know they made 305 H.O.'s with like 190 HP(not sure on torque).Does someone offer a conversion package (like the LT1 to LT4) that has all the parts? If not what parts do I need and where can I get em'. Please help this things a pig! Thanks All.
Josh

Lets see
Cam-fairly easy to swap
Compression ratio-not easily raised
Air Cleaner-Dual snorkel
?heads-Im not sure on this one
?exhaust manifolds-again unsure

First things first, make sure the car is in good tune (plugs/wires/cap/rotor/fuel filter/timing) you'd be amazed at the difference that this can make. Do all the recomended carb mods in the tech articles. Toss on a set of headers. Then I'd say do the cam swap. Then look into heads. Vortecs are good and cheap. You'd probably have to play around with them to get the compression right though. RB83L69 would be a good guy for you to talk to. He knows his sh*t when it comes to carb cars. It wouldnt be unrealistic to say that you could have a mid 14 second 305. Just takes some time, $$, and a little rage

Good luck

Agreed. To expound:

Cam - don't bother with a factory bump stick, get an aftermarket upgrade.
Compression ratio - requires new pistons. Most any parts store, requires complete engine disassembly, some special equipment to remove old from rods and install new. '85-up LG4 okay unless rebuilt with dished pistons.
Heads - identical. Porting, springs required for more performance. World 305s the right way to go.
Exhaust manifolds - L69 larger flow area, but good time to upgrade to headers.
Y-pipe - LG4 horrible, L69 better, just get one to go with the headers that goes to a 3" cat.
Cat & cat back - LG4 horrible, L69 better, just get 3" stuff aftermarket.
Secondary AV opening - some LG4's okay, others not. See tech article and fix if necessary.
Secondary rods & hanger - some LG4's okay, others not. Tune it.
Dual snorkel air cleaner - the "good" piece. No longer in production, need to get from swap meet or classifieds (or get really, really lucky...).
Chip - L69 better, get aftermarket while you're at it.
Gears - L69 typically better, choose ratio based on intended use and get aftermarket.

Summary: Do what I did. Gears on Santa's list (but I hear you have to be nice...).

I'd say just get an open element air cleaner, they look better IMO and they are more breathable.

As for gears, it doesn't matter what engine was in it, the gears are the same I do believe. I have an LG4 with 3.23s in it(they were there stock, and also in my 4th gen rear)

I wouldn't go that far. Off-idle stumble, partial choke throttle response, and hot weather stop-&-go falling-on-it's-face are problems an open element can cause that a dual snorkel can solve. Ask me how I know. An open element WILL be better for power than a stock LG4 air cleaner, no doubt about that.

Take a look at https://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/techdb.shtml . Some models of '86 LG4's, for instance, only got 2.73's, while no L69's got anything less than 3.23's. Most anything could be ordered from the factory, though.

Actually, Year One sells the dual snorkel cleaners but you gotta pay around $300

GM is also making them again. In fact, they sell the entire assembly along with a 350 HO to go with it. Not very cost effective, but available nonetheless

I got lucky last week and found one for $75 Canadian. Now all I need are the funnels.

Not all. Could also be 3.23. Check the tech data on https://www.thirdgen.org/messgboard/...ML/003460.html .

Didn't I already say that?

Can you get it from GM separate from the conversion kit? I honestly hadn't checked at the dealer. But, Classic Industries told me two days ago they no longer offer it because GM quit making them. Some outfits may have some left over, however.

I just don't know! I just saw the pics of these new GM crate engines for 3rd gens in the mags lately and they come with the much desired dual snorkel aircleaners. So GM has got to either be making them or have enough stashed away for all the engines they anticipate selling.

I just talked to Shagannapi Chev-Olds here in Calgary this week and they can get me the passenger side snorkel for my 305 HO cleaner but not the driver's side one

I thought the driver's side funnel would be the same on the dual snorkel setup but they aren't. The standard ones are a little smaller at both the intake and outlet end, where the flexible hose connects the funnel to the snorkel. Go figure.

57kid,

Go here: http://www.yearone.com/serverfiles/f...ain2.asp?cat=G

Then choose Air/Fuel on the left, and then look under GM Performance Parts. You will see the 305 HO Dual Snorkel outfits are still for sale at Year One
