Different starters ?

Hey everyone. My starter is gone (solenoid is sticking and not engaging) and I was told that 5 speed starters and automatic starters are different. I have an auto starter in there. It was rather easy to put the bellhousing over it, but I'm told it wont be so easy when I take it off and have to replace it. So.. do 5 speed cars really use a different starter ??

From 90 or 91 on, 5speed 305s had a smaller starter that uses rare earth magnets. It fits better with full length headers I know for sure. It also has the parallel bolt holes. (but so do most 350s-my 400block did not).

I checked on this at work (parts store) and it turns out that the 305 manual and auto both use the same starter. I'd heard a similar rumor, but apparently it's not true in all cases. Interestingly enough, the 305 and 350 use different starters, although the only visible difference I could find was the size of the large bolt that the power lead hooks to on the solenoid. 305 and 350 have the same flexplate, so there's no difference on the spacing or number of teeth or anything. Maybe the 350 starter has more torque?
This is all for 91-92 f-body, mind you.
