Hey there,
I have a 1991 Trans Am. The only model above is the GTA, which was made from 87 until 92. They only made about 250 in 92. I would assume the 350 Camaro and Bird would run comparable times. I wouldnt see one having an advantage over the other. I love mine, even though it is only a 305. So, there is the base Firebird 82-92, from 82-86 the Firebird SE, then the Formula replaces SE, until 92, the Trans Am 82-92, and the GTA 87-92, there were a couple of years in the late 80's when thye made a Turbo Trans Am, a V6 that will scoot. Anyway, hope this helps give you an idea. You can also try the link on thirdgen's homepage, under Tech Central, go to Tech Data, it lists all of the modles made each year, and how many. Also, the Firebird was remodeled in 91 and 92, and the Tuned Port Injected engines changed from MAF to MAP systems. I really could go all day, maybe someone else can help out cause I am goin to bed.

You can also go to readers rides, on the homepage and look at the pictures of pre 91 birds. ANd compare them with the 91 and 92, there is a lot of difference, I like them better myself, you judge for yourself!

if you want a cool looking bird get a 91-92 gta but if you want a fast one stick to the 350 firebird formulas because they are much lighter. compared to camaros birds are usually heavyer but I think the formula 350 is comparable to the weight of an RS camaro except with the 350 and (if you can find one) the good handling package.
oh yea -- convertible T/As and Birds are sweet but im not sure they come with 350s so check around.
happy shopping when you get out!

There really isn't that much of a performance difference between the GTAs (probably the heaviest of the F-bodies) and Formulas (probably the lightest of the F-bodies). About 100 lbs according to a magazine article I had in 1991 that tested 5 different 1991s.
In the test the L98 Formula was a shade under 14.5 and the L98 GTA was a shade over 14.5. It was about .1 difference between the two.
Actually my 1991 GTA is surprisingly light. I have had it weighed with no driver and minimal fuel, and mine weighs only 3,410 lbs. I know quite a few 3rd Gen F-bodies that weigh more.
What I do like about my 1991 is that I just don't see them on the road "everyday". Never have actually. 1992s are virtually identical, but even rarer as pointed out above.
What I like the most about the 1991-92 Firebirds is the instrument panel. I think it the best looking of all the versions that ever went into an 3rd gen F-body.
Also, on the performance side, the Firebirds do have a slightly more restrictive intake, but that is easily fixed.

ok well i decided to do the financially retarded approach, im going to save up about 6-7gs and buy a 2002 SS, well ill be in debt awhile, and its not a third gen, but hey, ive owned two thirdgens, and theyll be around for a while! last chance (hopefully un-true) to buy a new camaro right? and enough of this searching for the right used car, just buy one off the lot =) anyways, ill get in touch after i get out, see if i change my mind and just decide to buy a thirdgen that needs an engine, and just get a can of spray paint and put SS on the back, WMU take care all
