no start, sometimes

Greetings,

I own a 1989 iroc that has been having intermediatte starting problems. The car will turn on normally around 6-7
times, then after that it won't start at all. Everything else like the headlights, gauges, radio, etc. work fine. Then, after sitting overnight the car will start normally like if there is nothing wrong.

Thanks,
Gerry

P.S. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When you experience the no-start condition, is the engine warm? Has it been allowed to sit for 10+ minutes before it won't start? Does opening the throttle about 15-20% help start it ?

You may need to monitor fuel pressure on shutdown to help determine if you have injectors leaking fuel into the runners. There is also a possibility that the fuel pressure regulator is leaking internally and flooding the plenum.

If the fuel pressure remains steady, you may also have an electrical problem with a heating HEI switching module or coil. Once the engine does start, does it run normally even after reaching normal operating temperature?

Does the starter even make any noise when you have this hot no start problem? If you don't even get a click then you probably have a silenoid spring gone bad and when its hot it doesn't have enough spring pressure to engage the starter drive. Once it cools down it will start as normal. An easy check for this is when it is hot and won't start take a long screw driver etc. and with the key in the run position jump the battery wire to the start wire on the starter silenoid (the only 2 wire down there) If it starts you know what your problem is. Sorry bout the bad spelling its been a really long night.

Thanks guy's for your replies,

I don't think it's a hot start problem since I have remote selenoid installed in her. This problem happens, sometimes even when the car has been sitting around overnight, but it will eventually start. Also, the car will start when I jump start the selenoid. Once the car is running it will behave normally up until when the problem happens again.

Thanks,
gerry

So you have a remote selenoid in it but it will start when you jump the selenoid? Is that correct? Could your remote selenoid be bad? are all the connections clean?

So what is the answer to this question? specifically during a no-start episode.

I really need help!
I took the car to a local car audio shop to have them bypass the vats system. The guy checked the vats and he's sure that there is nothing wrong with it. He suspect's it's the remote stater selenoid since the car starts when the selenoid is jumped. Could this be the problem? Somebody please help!

Thanks,
Gerry

P.S. The car wont start sometimes but, all the lights, radio, etc. will turn on.

Isn't that what I asked you earlier? I would think if you jump the solenoid and its starts thats your answer!

No problem Gerry. By jumping the solenoid you eliminate it from the loop. If it starts each and every time you jump it when this problem comes up you know that you have found your problem. By running a remote solenoid you usually eliminate the GM hot start issue but maybe yours is old or of not very good quality. Don't know. I don't think anyone here will knowingly give you bad info.
