Oh My... please help, no start.

So my brother went out and bought an '88 GTA some months ago, which looks nice, but spends 95% of the time in the shop. total lemon. that and my new 350 runs circles around his, muahah. but anyway...

When you go to start this badboy, it screeches - no start. You can crank the bugger by hand, then it might work, but its just going to get worse - probably is, so its not being driven. Now, my guess is the starter is eating up the flywheel. $$$.

Apparently, he took it somewhere and they told him his ring gear was messed. Now, is this possible, and if so, what is this going to cost him?

His GTA is equipped with the TPI 350ci, auto tranny, lame rear end, blahblah. Anyway, we're ready to burn this P.O.S. Lesson to be learned: DO NOT, buy an F-body from someone who has owned the car since they were *17*.

Later boys,
Hype.

The flex plate (which has the ring gear welded onto it) is less than $50. You can replace it without pulling the trans all the way out of the car, if you disconnect the TC, and then everything else from it to give it room enough to slide back a few inches, then put a couple of long (like 6") bolts in place of a couple of the bell housing bolts, and slide it back. You can get up in there with a box-end wrench to take it off & on the crank.

Replace the starter while you're at it.

Cool, good to go. Once I get home from university I'll get him a ring gear for Christmas.

Thanks again RB,
Hype.
