rear main seal

if the rear main seal is bad..is it a must to replace the bearings?

Yikes, what the hell are you talking about?

If it is an '85 or earlier, you have to pull the oil pan and the rear main bearing cap, but you don't have to replace the bearing.

If it is an '86 or later, you pull the tranny and flywheel/flexplate and R&R it from the seal adapter, never touching the oil pan.
