Sound clips for a "noisy" gear drive?

Hi, for some reason, I love the sound of noisy gear drives on cars. I want to buy one, but my parnets say it's way too loud and they don't want me driving that through my neighborhood. My car/set-up is under my profile.

I want the "noisy" kind. Does anyone have one or can they describe how loud it is, or do you know where I can get a sound clip? I want to try to get it.

Thanks, Brandon

It sounds like gear clatter. It might sound cool as a car goes by but if you're the one driving, you'll find the "cool" sound gets annoying real fast.

Throw a bunch of steel ***** in the rear end and drive around, youll get the same annoying sound and its easier that pulling half of the engine bay apart

I assume no liability for your differential

I guess it might mke sense. I've only been in one car with a gear drive before (a monte carlo I almost bought) and I can't quite remember what it sounded like. They definitely sound killer driving by though and idling. You know where I could find some sound clips?

The "loud" ones would probably make your head pop...

i thought you can't install gear drives on our cars because of the knock sensor?

i don't see why anyone would want to run one of those things. it's going to transmit all your harmonics from the crank up into your cam and cause premature wear. seen it happen on too many motors.

Gear drives will wreak havoc on a knock sensor, but by the looks of his avitar hes not running EFI so its not an issue.

Ummm... running a knock sensor and no false knock issues. Also have 14k on the cam and its fine.

I do see lots of myths though that apparently are not bothering me or anyone else I know running them.

I have seen a few peoples knock sensor log before/after they installed a gear drive. it does pick it up!

I have had a PJ gear drive on my 85 corvette for 9 years and have not had a single problem with anything related with it.
I have heard people say you will have problems with your knock sensor but i have not, but they do get anoying sometimes.

Well I don't have a knock sensor, so nothing to worry about. There's also a ZR-1 Vette at our church with one, but I'm assuming it's the quiet kind, because it's not that loud.

Do you have the quiet or noisy version?

If its got straight cut gears I could definatly see it generating false knock. While the sensor does a good job at detecting actual knock, it, and the module, are also equally good at picking up mechanical noise. Ive been conteplating eliminating the sensor altogether. Although it did alert me to my last transmission falure. Probably wouldnt of found out about it untill the car left me stranded.

Sorry guys for taking so long to reply. It has the noisy one and not a problem and after this amount of time i dont think it will have.
That's not to say others won't.
a couple of my friends have had them and had to take them out for various reasons.

No, a gear drive is what takes place of your timing chain or belt, and ususally they're a good bit louder then a chain or belt drive.

yes of course what was I thinking. One thing I did hear about those is that they are dead accurate when it comes to timing. Well thanks for clearing that up for me!!

That's one reason I want one, also, no chain or belt to worry about. Plus I like the sound. I'm thinking I might pick up one of those Pete Jackson gear drives (quiet kind now that I've heard the video clip). I'm not sure yet though, I'm gonna get some more feedback.

I've had a quiet and noisy one in two different motors and never had any problems. I like the sound.

When I had the supercharger on the motor, you could barely hear the gear drive whine at idle due to the blower.

Also, mine tended to not be as loud after about 10K miles or so.

Personally I thought that it would be a "cool" to hear that sound. I installed a billet aluminum cover with the idler built into it. Let me tell you, I put about 500 miles on my newly built engine and found myself cutting back into it to remove it for a dual roller chain. To me it sounded like a power steering pump with aerated oil in it. It got to me after a while. -Bob

+/- a degree or two. There's a bit of lash between the gears.

Less than 1 degree on mine vs 4-5 with the GMPP roller chain.
