Wacky fuel gauge!

Hey guys....my fuel gauge reads full all the time. How can you tell if the sending unit is bad? I tried the tests in the repair manuals I got i.e. Chilton/Haynes like removing the connector and having the neede go al the way to full and what not. But I can't tel lcause it's ALWAYS on full! However, it occasionally works. It'll sometimes show how much gas I actually have. But then goes right back to full again. DOes this sound like a bad sending unit to you guys? I'm not to keen about the price of these things..... Thanks!

Seems like a bad sending unit. The fuel gauge sending unit reads 90 ohms when full, 0 ohms when empty when measured with resistance from ground. Zero ohms is a short (to ground). So, you dont have a short.

Other possiblity is a bad fuel gauge but i'm betting its the sending unit in the tank.

95% sure its a bad sending unit.

You can verify the connections from the gauge to the tank sender. If they are intact, you can try to coax the sending unit into operation if the tank has relatively little fuel. From the underside, you can try to tap the bottom of the fuel tank with the heel of your hand, or GENTLY with a rubber mallet.

I have this same problem too. I am measuring 56 ohms coming from the tank though. Just happened after I put my fuel pump in though. Any ideas?

the thing that floats on the gas to tell ya how much gas you have - it might be stuck on something which would explain why you're getting a constant reading of 56 ohms. Sorry, you're probably going to have to take out the sending unit and look things over.

you kicked the tank? and it doesn't work now? Now ya know it's a bad sending unit. Or at least a bad connection at the sending unit.

Turned out my connections were bad inside the tank. Cleaned them up, no biggie. Works fine now.
