I thought you said you don't need EGR on a ZZ4 in California...

The stock one should clear. Did you try loosing the valve cover and putting it on while working atround the valve cover? If that doesent work your going to have to get a spacer for the egr that means buy another egr unit.

A ZZ4 in its stock trim is not smog-legal in CA in any thirdgen... the heads lack an exhaust crossover passage so even if you put the valve on, the EGR valve won't do anything. But if the ECM doesn't notice and light the SES light, and the inspector sees the valve but doesn't check the function, it might slide through anyway.
If it clears your existing valve covers (I assume it does) you might want to just put those on your new motor instead; or if yours are still the perimeter-bolt kind, just go to the junkyard or check this site's classifieds and get a set of center-bolt ones.

I'm not really sure where anyone got the idea that I have a ZZ4, I have an LG4 based 355. The Edelbrock Performer manifold has more of a high rise to it than stock. So the angle for the EGR mounting pad on the manifold is steeper. The stock EGR doesn't clear the valve cover in any way. I mean that it won't sit flush with the manifold because the round part of the EGR hits the valve cover.
By the way, ZZ4 engines have a CARB EO# that make them smog legal to instal in F-bodys.
RB83L69, did you accidentally reply to this post? What is it that you're trying to say?

Thats why there should be a spacer on the bottem of the egr, is there a spacer? It should go, gasket to manifold, spacer, gasket than egr. When I wanted a smog legal car (LOL) I misplaced the spacer and had the same problem you did. If it has an egr port on it than by all means the stock egr should fit.
Good luck!

To be legal (the way I understand it) you must use a kit (don't remember P/N) that come with the ZZ4 and lots of other stuff that is only legal when installed in 83-87? camaro's that originally came with the LG4 and 700R4.

Anyway, do you have the original valve covers on? I had ample clearance when I installed my Performer on my 86 LG4 and I don't remember there being any spacer. I will take a look tonight.

SSC, I need two spacers to clear the valve cover.
Five7kid, first off, I never said that I had a ZZ4 anywhere, read my sig, was dead stock 305, now LG4 based 355. And go back "over there" and see that the EO# for CARB is D-278. Get facts before you speak, you'll save alot of embarassment that way.
Wiggly, yes, I have the stock valve covers on, and it just don't fit.
