permatex copper hi-temp RTV silicone

anyone here ever use this stuff as a gasket maker for their exhaust? A friend of mine told me that that's all he used on his 5.0L. I also checked out the permatex website, and they say the same thing.

For those who have used it.. do you tighten the nuts/bolts AFTER the silicone has cured, or do you tighten them right after you've applied the silicone?

thanks

I use permatex copper for pretty much everything, but I haven't used it on exhaust manifolds. I always let it skin over (light tackiness) then hand tighten the fasteners (leave about 1/16" gap to get an even distribution of sealant) and leave it sit for about ten minutes, then snug them all down. Never had a leak from anything yet. The idea is to let the gasket maker "form" for compression, not to compress it completely out of the area you want sealed.
