Power Steering pump removal

I have a Serpentine bely set-up and wondered how you get the power steering pump out of the bracket? To get to the bolts to remove it, it seems that I have to remove the pulley from it. Do I just use a large 55 or so Torx in the center of the pulley to try and remove it? Thanks
Tony

don't know about the serpentine belt set up but all the steering pumps I've seen used a puller.

You'll need to use a puller which attaches to the centre flange of the pulley (i.e don't pull the pulley around the outside). Be careful when you do this as your pulley might be so stuck on there that the flange begins to break or the pulley itself bends. This happened with mine and a few others on this board.

If this happens you have two choices. Either yank the pulley off anyway and get another one, or completely disassemble the pump from the other side.

If you bend the pulley they are only $14 from Autozone. I did it not to long ago. You can also just rent the tool from them for free with a $40 retureed deposit.

To get the power steering pump out of the bracket, there are three short bolts that hold the power steering pump in the bracket. Use the appropriate wrench and remove the three bolts,,, these bolts are hard to get to, so the bracket along with the pump should be removed from the engine first.

The bolts that hold the power steering to the bracket are torx. You have to remove the pulley to get to them. I believe they were a T55, it's been a while.

Interesting. My serpentine setup is off of a 91. I guess at some point they switched unless someone else had replaced yours for regular bolts. As a matter of fact, all of my bolts for the serp setup are torx. The only exception is the A/C compressor.

it may have to do with the year change. mine is the factory non-serpentine setup.

Mine are regular bolts. If they were Torx, you could nother get a tool on that bolt head. On my car, the bracket covers the bolts. You have to go in sideways with the open end of a standard wrench.

I have changed out my powr sterning pump 3 times in the last year and had a fractured bracket (twice).

So, I have become an expert at this.

Do you have the serpentine setup found on the later year camaros? I do and the bolts holding the power steering pump on were torx. I had to rent the power steering pulley puller to get it out of the way to remove the pump itself.

The older v-belt setup used the regular bolts.

My car is an '87, so it has the v-belt system. In '88, the cars were switched to the serpentine belt. The thread starter has an '86, so I assume that he has the bracket similar to mine, so he should have to get to the bolts only from the side.

Also, it appears that he or someone has switch the car over to the serpentine belt system (which I am thinking to do).

Re: Power Steering pump removal

what are the size of the bolts that hold the power steering pump to the bracket? mine is a v-setup i believe. so i should have the regular bolts. the problem is my pump fell off. and the bolts are no longer there. i need to pull the pulley off and bolt it back to the bracket. somebody please help.
