fuel pump humm

im getting an extra loud humming noise coming from the back of the car just behind the rear seat. the noise is constant now whereas maybe a couple of weeks ago i didnt really notice it. is this the fuel pump going bad and if so whats the average price to replace on these things? car is starting to have a wierd surging to it now too, mainly at stop lights. feels like its going to die right when i hit the brakes then the power comes right back.
also i have seen that someone made an access panel to their fuel pump, is this advisable or should i let someone else handle this?

First thing I would try is a new fuel filter. If that doesnt help, then go from there as the fuel pumps are a pain to swap.

The loud humm could be a fuel pump going bad, but my pump has always been noisy with no problems. Obviously it is going to be louder when the car is lower in gas as the pump is no longer submerged.

The pump may just be getting louder trying harder to push fuel through a plugged filter, which would also possibly cause surging, that is why I would start with that.

I would start with a fuel pressure test.

that hum (which is obvious probably 75% of the time) bothered me and I was concerned the fuel pump may crap out on me eventually but after I talked to a couple other techs at my work both said it's not nearly loud enough to be concerned about. They told me once i can hear the thing humming over my stereo, on a full tank of gas and it sticks around all the time to get worried about it.

Same here, mine has hummed since I got a new pump 30,000+ miles ago. No trouble yet...

thats cool, i think i'll not worry about it too much just yet. funny thing though, i just installed a couple of 12'' woofers in the back and after a little speaker break in the sound got a little quiter back there, go figure.

Sounds like a fuel pump is about to go out....Change it before your car leaves you stranded somewhere
