305 build up/Refresh

Now before any of you say ditch the 305 and get a 350...don't bother. I have a 350 that I plan on building over next summer and winter. I don't have the cash to beef up everything else along with it. So, I have my 305 to consider. I want to use it over the summer so why not make it a tad faster? I have a set of 882 ported heads already, are those better than my stock LB9 heads? I have headers, full exhaust. I was thinking of getting a cam. Which is good? Internal parts will most likely stay stock as it's still a 305 and I just want a budget mild build up. Now with the stock TPI stuff...that will be staying. I might just port them out a little bit but nothing major. My main question is about the heads and cam.

comp cams xe256 grind would probably be best for a stock bottom end. With 882 heads you may have to plain them down for decent compression so you know.

Hmm, that seems like a decent cam. Would I have to swap out for some new rockers/springs? Also, would the torque converter play a role in this? I'm thinking of getting a 2200-2400 holeshot converter anyway.

rockers would be fine but, springs maybe maybe not... Have heard differing opinions on what the stock springs are good for, i'd buy the k-kit myself. Comes with a double timing chain, keepers, retainers, lifters, cam and valve seals which should probably be replaced anyways. The kit is 310$. It's what i plan to use on my 305 lg4.

I emailed comp for a cam recomendation and they gave me this 1 for my 305 btw. I also told them i'd be running a stock stall so you should be fine there (i'd still recomend a slight stall myself) so the 2200-2400 b&m is probably a plus.

Keep the heads you have. Shaving an 882 casting down isn't worth the price, IMO.

I had an Xe256 in my LG4. Worked fine on a factory converter.

So if I was to get that cam then install that B&M converter, would it be classified as useless to me? Should I get a cam that works well with the converter, what do I do here...lol!

Match the cam & converter. If you stay with the stock converter, go with the XE256. If you get the converter, step up to more cam.

the 262 grind would like a lil bit more stall. Dd2000 shows that the curve of the 256 cam could still use a mild stall but, this is theoretical at most.....

The 882s do make great wheel blocks, so don't throw them out yet!! Keep those LB9 heads on the 305 though, they are lightyears ahead of the 882 castings, on either a 305 or a 350.

Look at some of Comp Cams 'XE' cams for EFI motors. They have ones that are specifically designed to work with TPI engines, mild to wild.

Hmm ok, sounds about right. So you guys think the B&M holeshot would work well what I want to do? Once the bigger motor gets built, I'll just swap what I can over to that one, which includes the converter so I won't be buying a whole whack of other parts. I'm going to do a little more research but I think thats what I'm going to go with.

Rockers? Springs? Is there a valvetrain kit I could buy?
