est problem

just installed a set of headman shortys y pipe and new cap and rotor on my t/a. car started right up ran perfect but the check engine light was on.

after about 15 mins of idling i shut the car off to sweep out my garage and i couldnt get it to start, then when it would
start for a few seconds it sounded like it was flooding out bad

i hooked up my snap on scanner and i have a est code 42. and i had a lean condition code i checked all the wiring nothing is pinched and all plugs are connected

i changed the 02 sensor because the 1 that was in the headers when i got them was used and according to my scanner it wasnt switching it was stuck on lean

i changed the module even tho i had a feeling that wasnt the problem because i have a twin turbo hood and the car was sitting outside for a while and i have only put about 60 miles on it the last 3 or 4 years and there was alot of leaves and moisture in the dist area but i still have the code for the est but the 02 sensor is switching and i dont have the o2 code anymore

im usually pretty good w/ this stuff but i have really lost interest in this car and am getting disgusted pretty easily w/ it, its probably something stupid i am overlooking

anyone have any ideas???

When I thought I had a EST problem I remember using a dwell meter to test it out. If you do a search you'll probably find my post, someone posted an awesome troubleshooting chart. From what I remember the problems with EST could be related to the module itself, the distributor itself, the ECM, or the knock sensor. I ended up with a bad distributor, and of course I replaced everything else first (EST, knock sensor, and ECM) proving that I am a fool when it comes to working on cars. What can I say the ECM tested bad but there was no difference with a good reman ECM. Dont worry your not the only one that gets disgusted with these cars.

Heres what I would do. Number one verify that the EST plug by the blower motor is connected (the one you disconnect to set timing). Number two find or make a friend with the same type of ECM and ask to try theirs as a test, unplug from their car plug into yours. After that I would use the DVM and Dwell meters to test. If all else fails replace the distributor. They break when you least expect/suspect it.
