TBI on TPI Long Block
im not sure what to put in this thread, but everyone seems to be telling me to make another.
this is basically a spawn from my other thread 'is the rs a bad platform'
I have a TPI longblock with TBI injection in my car right now. I guess that means my cam and heads are different then a normal L03. (081 heads)
Tips so far on how to make me faster are:
Edelbrock performer carb intake and adaptor
Exhaust
timing
prom tuning
open element
posi +3.73 gears
fuel pressure regulator
apparently this is a low 14's combination with my setup.
now a couple questions:
what is a fuel pressure regulator, how much does it cost and how do i install it.
my timing is at 6* as of last night. Car feels pretty smooth, but for the past few months, every time i start, the car will rev erratically (low-high, low-high, low-high) then stabilize just under 1000rpm. It seems to have started since i first advanced my timing months ago. Also, the car will sometimes idle really high (around 2000rpm), then slowly come down to below 1000.
whats this about being able to just remove my prom from factory? is this a TBI thing? and can i just purchase a EEprom so i can keep pulling it out and editing it, rather then wiping every time?

Here's a guy that deleted smog and put in a drop base air cleaner (open element)

The Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator is free you just do it yourself

Here's a good writeup on modding the L03

As for exhaust I would suggest headers and a nice 3in, I prefer to put the muffler where the cat goes and dump the exhaust right before the rear axle but you might not be able to do this with smog regulations.
As far as price goes, fuel regulator is free, timing's already adjusted, drop base is cheap, putting the car on a diet is free, exhaust will be a tad expensive.
Double check everything for a vaccum leak, sounds like something may have developed a small leak when you were adjusting the timing.
Take her to the track and give us a base line on this sucker!!! Good luck man.

Timing - IAC
Your timing may be related to your IAC. Take it out, clean it, oil it lightly, set it properly and make sure the connectors are good. If the connectors are loose or something you will get an idle up to 2000 rpm. Inproper setting of the IAC will get the engine reving to warm up.

what is the IAC?
it started doing something weird two days ago. It revs REALLY low on startup, almost till its going to shut off, then it will stabilize. And sometimes when im idling and go to move again, it will shut off.
After finding out that my car is running lean, it makes sense. Almost like there isnt enough gas going in sometimes.

What is an IAC?
Also, am i right to assume the edelbrock performer intake is a direct bolt on for my applcation? I found one for cheap here, new. what are the est horse power gains?
