short block----long block same thing?
I was told that my 1987 has a short block chevy.
I sorry if I sound dumb. But whats the difference between a short block chevy and a long block chevy?
I was told they were different......now some people are telling me there the same.
I'm confused!!
Thanks for the help!

(lamens term)The short block is just the engine block with the bottom end. The long block is the same thing with the addition of cylinder heads.

I was talking about Chevy small blocks. I was told my 1987 TA had a short block. Thats what I was asking. So who ever told me I had a short block is full of crap? So theres no difference between them.
Lets just take the 350 block...thats the same for ALL years?

Short block is a term that applies to the block, pistons, connecting rods, crankshaft, and bearings. A long block is the short block+cylinder heads, oil pump, oil pan(?), and some other smaller crap that I don't remember off the top of my head. Therefore, every car in existence has a long block, and every long block contains a short block.
Don't feel dumb about the question btw, we all start from somewhere. Hope you have better luck with your TA then me

According to the Chilton's manual all 350's are small blocks. Also the small block intake manifold has 12 bolts and the big block has 16 (according to Mr. C -don't quote me)

I hate to add any confusion to the topic, but there is a such a thing as a tall deck block, and not just the big block . This would be a Rocket block, which is a small block chevy with deck height 9.325" (.300" taller than production)
