Timing chain?

I know this subject has been beat to death but i want to see what you guys think is wrong.

I came out to leave work the other morning the car started fine but was running rough, i figured if was from the cold and engine not warmed up.

Went the few blocks home still runnin rough. Shut it off and when i went to start it a few hours later it wouldent start. It poped a few times through the carb and then would just crank.

Pulled the air cleaner off looking to see if something was unpluged etc and i noticed that the dizzy was advanced a bunch. Just bought the car the day before and dident notice the dizzy being that way when i looked before but i think it may have already been that way.

I checked it out today and its getting fuel fine and getting a good spark, did replace the coil with a new one i already had.

It cranks over fine and will hit and want to start if the dizzy is advanced a bunch. Im thinking the timing chain and gears need replaced. Does that sound to you guys what it is.

The car ran fine before that with no missing or anything like that. Its a 86 firebird with a carbed 305 and a 700R4 tranny.

Thanks in advance

Don't you think you should at least check the timing?

So how do you know it's advanced a bunch if you didn't use a timing light, or did you?

If it's computer controlled, you need to disconnect the timing control so you can see the baseline timing, unless the Dizzy is using vacuum advance.
