MSD 6A, 6AL, or not?

was wondering about the pros/cons of adding one of those boxes to my ignition system for a slightly modified engine, as in bigger cam and more lift (about .525).

The factory ignition needs some kind of help. You may not need to go as far as one of those boxes, but getting one of those boxes will do the trick. A destinct advantage is the added rev limiter capability.

i've got MSD billet distributor and coil on there, along with the 8.5 super conductor wires, but i was thinking the 6A or 6AL box would help the spark out a bit...

five7, I thought factory spark setups were alright? Not going as far as the box then, what upgrade would you recommend? just a beefy coil?

An aftermarket coil and module is probably enough. As long as the cylinder ignites there's probably not a lot more power to be gained with upgraded ignition components.

I thought a "module" was that box. Ie, an MSD6... hmm, better bone up on my terminology.

Module is the electronic unit under the distributor cap.

How much does a module go for? MSD blaster coil work fine I'm guessing?

Okay, okay, okay. All 'stick said in the original post was "slightly modified engine". No mention that one of those mods was an MSD distributor.

MSD distributor means no more factory module.

On the other hand. . .

MSD box also means no more factory module.

On the other hand. . .

If you don't need rev limiter capability, still have a factory distributor, then an aftermarket performance module and coil are probably all you are going to need.

How much a module costs depends upon the distributor you have. The 7-pin large-cap HEI modules go for $50-$60.

Blaster coil needs to be the right type. Otherwise, yes, it's fine.

I have the small distributor. I was planning on getting a new coil but wanted some info on that module first. Thanks!

except that MSD uses GM modules in their distributors... at least they did in mine and one of the techs i talked to at MSD confirmed that, but then again, he was the idiot who told me my pick-up coil wires were backwards when they weren't.

SO... would the recommendation be to just go with what i've got, meaning the MSD dist and coil and no box?

With a non-GM module, too.

and that"s why it says "GM" on it? of course the flip side says "singapore"

anyhow, what'd be a good after-market module?

I have a question guys. My cousin gave me this msd ignition coil for my car the part number is msd8225. My car is an 82 transam with a 305 in it, the ignition system is stock. I checked around and that coil will work fine. My question is, can I use a stock ignition module with it or do I need to upgrade and what can I use that will work.

Thanks

Chris
