Starting an old engine?

Hey everyone, I recently bought a sport coupe with a 70's 350 in it, and lately have been able to spend some time on it. My problem is, I just can't get the engine to fire up. When I bought the car, we were able to pour gas down the carb, and it would run just as long as you were pouring gas into the carb. I figured that the carb was to blame, so I drained the gas out of the tank, replaced the carb, and now it wont even fire, except for a backfire or sputter here and there. I am bypassing the gas tank via a rubber hose and a can of gas. Same thing. A little sputter here and there. Here are the engine specs if that helps...

350 with a .284 duration cam, Q-jet, stock intake and straight pipe. Stock distributor too.

Sounds like the fuel pump is shot. Does it have fuel pressure? Does it fill the carb bowls when you crank it?

It does have pressure. When we bypassed the tank, we pumped out any bad gas in the fuel pump. Do you think the plugs could be shot?

Pull them and find out. What's the timing at, do the wires look rough, etc etc. Also, are you using a known good carb?

I'll go and pull the plugs, and see whats up. The carb is just a stock replacement Q-jet I bought from advance auto parts. All the wires look to be fine. The timing hasnt been touched really. Thanks for the help, too!

Problem: Car wouldn't start

What I did to fix it:
_________________________________________
1.emptied the gas tank of old gas
2.bought new carb.
3.Checked for spark
4.cleaned distributor terminals and all contact points
5.changed the plugs

I think that the plugs were mostly to blame, but the bad gasoline and mis-adjusted carb definately did NOT help.

Thanks again, lo-tec for helping me get it to run!

B's 92 camaro....
A new topic would actually get you more help.
You need to find out where the starter is getting the power to the solenoid when the key is not in the start position.
Prob a bad relay or something. Might even be a bad ignition switch.
The solenoid should have no power with the key in any position but start.
But maybe I will stand corrected. There are truly some ace guys on here and they will help with all their hearts coz they love 3rd gens.
If I was you I'd make a new topic bud.
