engine clean out
engine clean out
HI,
while not a Pontiac car, I do have a pontiac powered boat(455)
I recently discoverd why my boat was overheating while I had the engine out for structural repairs of the boat:
The engines water passegways are completley filled with mud.
I popped the freezeplugs out, and cleaned out what I could reach with a coat hanger, which was mostly the sides of the engine. However, how can I clean out the front and back? there are no freeze plugs there. I do not want to have the engine hot tanked because I don't want to tear the whole thing down.
I was thinking of drilling a few holes through the block and welding the repair?
any ideas?
thanks
Josh

Ha! a boat post on thirdgen! Ok you know this post doesnt belong here but.. I'll help anyway
Ok.. I would never recommend drilling a hole in the engine block, even if its in the water passage ways. Your weld may rust and cause problems later or who knows, just seems like a bad idea nd to much work if you ask me. I would recomend high pressure water to try and flush out the mud. Maybe take it down to the car wash, clean it out, then coat the wet metal with some type of anti rust chemical, anti freeze, can of pb blaster, whatever works.

mud in the water jackets? Seems like a common third gen problem...
Is it hardened? You'd think your water pump would blow this stuff out... (wait, in a boat, not sure how the cooling system is on there...)
But yea, high pressure water, either bring the block to the car wash, or rent a pressure washer, or maybe just a spray nozze on your hose.
Some rifle cleaning brushes will help too.

once you get it pretty clean, here's an interesting idea to help keep it that way.
