I am tired of my engines getting dirty inside, I change every 3000 miles, but that could be 5 or 6 months and don't put enough miles on fast enough to justify synthetic. What do you use that works ?

Buy a oil cooler kit from summit it will prolong the life of your oil also synthetic oils last longer and keep your engine cleaner. Not to mention they can also produce a little more hp over regular oils.

Last year, I put whopping 377 miles on my T/A. The year before that, it got 446 miles. The prior year, 548. Before that, 611 and 633 miles each year. Way back in 2000, I put a ton of miles on the car - 1,377 to be exact.

I don't accumulate enough miles to justify using synthetic, but it sits long enough between changes so that I cannot justify using anything BUT synthetics. I don't worry about the oil breaking down from use, but if I used a polymerized mineral oil, I'd certainly worry more about acid formation eating up bearing shells and etching the iron. I'd worry more about poor startup protection, too. For one change per year (for about $23 with an AC filter), I can't afford to use anything but synthetic.

But you can do anything you want, for whatever reason you want. I may be wrong, and ignorant, but I feel safer being ignorant while erring on the side of caution.

I know that synthetic is the ulimate oil, but I have 4 and soon 5 vehicles to maintain, I am just looking for an improvement over the quaker state I have been using for years. I have heard that Valvoline is good oil and their Maxlife is even better. Anyone used this with good or bad luck and did it keep the engine clean ???

Valvoline. Nothing but. I have used it in every car I have ever owned. I have a 99 ranger with 204K on it. Runs like a champ. Gets driven 100 miles roundtrip every day. I Also have a bonneville with 150K on it. I drive it 140 miles roundtrip every day. I cant help but believe Valvoline is good oil.

I have 6 vehicles in the family 'fleet'. They vary from normal duty daily use to hard duty (towing, racing) weekend use. I wouldn't consider using anything but AMSOIL.

Vavoline is probably an 'acceptable' oil. It's far from the best. Maxlife is something to use when your engine has started to deterioate from using their 'non-max-life' oil. If you had been using AMSOIL or Mobil 1 from the beginning, there would be no need for Maxlife.

Consider this line of reasoning: "I'm tired of tires that don't handle well. I don't drive enough miles to justify radial tires. I change the tires when they have 10000 miles on them, that would take me 2-4 years. What bias ply tires are you using that work?"

What would you say to someone asking that kind of question?

I couldnt see you recommending amsoil!

It is good stuff though. I am just partial to my valvoline. If I were going to run syn though, amsoil would be it.

Rotella T here, super cheap, quality oil. Of course, i have a flat tappet and like the extra "goodies" and for less than $10/5qts, its hard to beat. BTW, Valvoline for anything else

I use Caterpillar 15w-40 in my vehicles other than my wife's 99 GP GT. I use synthetic in that just because of the extended change intervals. I change it at 7500 miles there. She drives about 20 miles roundtrip to work each day and then we take long roundtrips each month and a half or so. PUt about 15-16,000 a year on it, and I can change the oil less often.

Why the Cat oil in the other vehicles? It's free! I do an oil change on someones twin diesel boat and have half or a third of a five gallon bucket left, the customer says he does not want it on board, the parts man won't take back an opened fiver, so my S10 and thirdgens are well supplied with oil. In any case, the Cat is API rated SJ/CH-4, and contains more anti wear additives as well as detergents than most blended oils intended solely for spark ignition engines.

Yes Five Seven I will try Amzoil one day. I have heard many folks on my vintage snowmobile (ok so I have eclectic hobbies!) rave about the two stroke lube.

Havoline is considered one of the better dino oils.

If you really want to clean up the engine's innards, use an HDEO like Delo 400 or Delvac 1300.

I run Delo 400 in my lawnmower!
