No oil pressure when cranking?

I'v noticed something on my car, when I'm cranking the engine, I have no oil pressure. Is this normal? Is the gauge just not registering until the engine starts or what? I know the second the engine starts that it shoots up right away to about 40 psi.

Sorry if it's a lame question, I've just never really noticed it until a short time ago.

you've got it right, nothing will read while cranking until the engine fires.

Allright, figured it was probably just me noticing it now, or caring about it now. Either way, thanks.
