Snapped timing chain in an 86
Snapped timing chain in an 86
Well todeay my timing chain decided to either snap or jump enough to where I can't start it. I am pretty sure my engine isn't a factory hyd roller? Am I correct?
Does anyone know if Checker/Kragen, Napa, Parts Plus, or Auto Zone sell a double roller?

Yeah, 87 was the first year for the roller cam.
Snapped timing chains almost always mean bent valves, so replacing the chain won't help in that case. It will still only run on 5-6 cylinders after you replace the chain. This is becuase the pistons will have dinged any valve left hanging significantly open when the cam stopped spinning as the chain let go.
If it just slipped a tooth you might get lucky and not have any bent valves.
I wouldn't do a double-roller. They can sometimes have interferece with the block above the main oil galley plug. It's simple to fix with a die grinder but do you really want to be grinding on the block with the cam out and the front timing cover off with the engine still in the car in your driveway?
