Is this a sound idea?

Had a buddy show me this website that had an article on modifying spark plugs after indexing them.

Fuel Economy Tips.com - Spark Plug Magic

The gains that they claim for this technique seem a little far fetched (as do the explanations for it). Is this just another Splitfire wannabe idea? Anyone tried it?

I dont think its going to be giving you 22% increases in torque and fuel economy but it is worth something.

The indexing trick has been around forever but this is the first i have seen of the drilling out the electrode and the theory does seem plausable but like i said i doubt its going to get 20%+ increases.

How this works is the center electrode will act like a satellite dish and “broadcast” the flame kernel toward the outer electrode. The 1/16” hole in the outer electrode will allow this flame to pass right through, giving the pencil torch effect. The pencil torch flame then extends into the swirling air-fuel charge and ignites far more fuel than would otherwise ignite, and it ignites it earlier in the combustion cycle so that the chemical energy in the fuel is more completely converted into heat energy in the cylinder when and where it counts!
Yea. Right. How exactly is it supoposed to do this when 10:1 the sharp edge you still have at the edge of the dished electrode is where the spark is going to jump. Then since you have the ground strap dead centered, chances are that it will strike somewhere on the sharp outer edge... even whn it strikes in the nice hole, you now have shrouded (though not extrodinarily badly) the flame propagation as it tries to force it's way through a tiny teeny hole and then around the strap.

Faaaar better, imnsho, to do like we've done for years, index and cut back the ground strap halfway into the depth of the electrode (so when looking at it from above, the ground strap edge is at the center of the center electrode). That would increase your chances of a better strike than the silliness on that site. If you REALLY want extreme just cut the strap off.
