odd noises, please help!

i have had noisy lifters ever since i put this motor together, i have tried every lash setting i have heard, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and 1 turn past zero and they're still noisy. just latley i have developed a squeek that has the same timing as what a loose valve would sound like, where a loose valve would go tap tap tap this goes squeek squeek squeek. it has completely baffled me, the only thing i can think of is my rockers and weather they are self aligning or not, they are sealed power stock replacement ones, the part that rides on the valve stem is smooth if that helps any. the cam is an xe268, the lifters are also sealed power, the pushrods are stock, and it has adequate springs and the heads are machined for .500 lift. could the pushrod be rubbing on the head because my rockers aren't right?

anyone that could shed some light on this would be a great help!!! thanks.

which heads? if your factory heads didn't have self aligning rockers then your setup is fine how it is, the pushrod hole acts as a guide. sometimes lifter noise is present no matter what, you should be listening for a solid lifter type "clacking" if valves were loose, otherwise i wouldn't worry about it.

they are factory so thats ok, but what about that squeeking noise i described. it seems to come and go of its own accord. it is pretty loud, i can hear it when the car is idling from about 20yds. away.

thanks!

sounds to me like a belt slipping would be the squeeking, nothing else can really make that sound.

i'll try taking the belts off tomarrow but it really doesn't sound like any slipping belt i've ever heard.

it's not the belt.

what kind of squeeking noise, perhaps you could take it to an oil change type place and let them hear it and just shoot out ideas, or perhaps a local thirdgenner around you off the regional boards. Without hearing it in person I can't think of anything else.

the car isn't on the road yet, so i'm kind of limited. its barley a squeek, almost a ping, not detonation, it's really hard to describe. it has the exact same timing as a loose lifter would so it leads me to believe that it is valvetrain related. a better way to describe it would be a chirp that comes and goes.

thanks again!

Car: 91 RS
Engine: 305 TBI
Transmission: 700R4
Axle/Gears: Factory 2.73 (unfortunately)
Hi,

I have a 91 RS that I just rebuilt the engine in and I am having similar problems. My squeeking sound is loudest at the bend in the "Y" pipe. It does it only around the 1000 - 1800 rpm mark. I thought at first it was from my new headers. I took off my A.I.R system and had to plug off the tubes where the hoses would go on top. The little tubes poking threw the headers might cause a vacuum and make it squeek. I don't think that is the problem anymore. I tend to think that it is inside the head somewhere. I am going to take it up to the shop that rebuilt the engine and have them track it down. The noise bugs the living crap out of me! It makes it pretty difficult to cruise through town looking cool in a nice car that is squeeking. I will let you know what I find out. If you figure yours out first let me know.

R.S.

i found out what mine was, it turned out that the rocker ball wasn't completley broken in. i had just replaced the rockers on one side when the noise started.

It should not sqeek broken in or not! are they new rockers and *****? if not they should be installed as a set. and oiled heavely before the initial start up. Are you geting oil up the push rods in to the rocker arms? if every thing is new and you have plenty of oil. I would look at sumpthing else rubbing or posibly too strong of valve springs (not likely). I woud look at each rocker and ball look for galling from lack of lube.

the rockers and ***** were installed as a set, and generously lubed with the red assembly grease. while the engine is running ,at idle, all the rockers have oil in them. the oil doesn't really shoot out of the pushrod, except the front one, it kind of dribbles out. i have about 30psi of oil pressure at idle.

the squeeking has stopped though.
the cam is an xe268 and has good springs, if that helps.
