please, please hep
Ok..for starters please dont be cruel, i am only beginning to learn about detailed engine stuff so please make your responses detailed.thanks.
Ok, Last night after i had finished replacing the valve stem seals on the drivers side and had put the rockers back on to the tightness the hanes manual specified I turned on the car to see if it was working correctly. It didnt start the first try..which is kinda normal for it...(guessing fuel pump or something). Anyways, on the second try we heard a really loud sound from the engine. Sounded to me like a backfire. Then as it was running there was really loud clacking sound from the drivers side. Like constantly. So...im wondering did i put the rockers on wrong..? And what could that sound have been...?
Please...any help would be greatly appreciated..

Sounds like you just need to adjust the rockers. No biggie.
Start the motor, and slowly tighten each of the rockers that's clacking, until it quits. Then slowly back off each of the others until it starts clacking, then slowly re-tighten it until it just quits. Then shut the motor off, and tighten each one ½ turn more.
That's all it takes. Should be perfectly normal after that.

"Overtightened" or "undertightened." Either can cause a hard/no-start condition. It would backfire through the intake if the intake valve never really closes (overtightened). It "clatters" if it's too loose, amongst other things.

It'll also backfire through the intake if an exhaust is one of the ones that's clacking, and it's so loose that it never really opens. So yeah, the rockers being misadjusted, is pretty much the simplest explanation that fits all the facts; which makes it probably the right one.
Just stay calm and follow the procedure as detailed, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
