How do these look

Removed my stock heads off my LB9 today, what are you're thoughts on how they look? What could cause that white stuff on one of the valves there?

The first pic is the Drivers side, and obviously the 2nd is passenger. Heres a pic of what I've done so far. It's getting top end rebuild with ported parts. Hopefully I'll see 13's this summer.

Either stop feeding it tums or give it some gas, looks like its running lean on a few cyls.

Cover the lifter valley with something to keep contamination out. Clean the decks and piston tops, and remove carbon in the upper portion of the bore. Clean the pistons by running each one to the top of its bore. I've had good luck with a wire cup brush in a die grinder or drill to remove carbon and gasket fragments, then wiping with lacquer thinner or MEK to remove any traces of sealant, gasket, or other contaminants. Run a tap into each head bolt hole.

I'll second the notion that some of the holes look lean.

What's the deal with the intake valve on #1? Is that carbon falling/scraped off, or something else?

It's the same as the other picture, some form of build up. Thats why I posted it on here cause I had no idea why it happened or what it is. Prolly just carbon build up or something. The car ran before I took this all apart and had no knocking or ping or whatever else, ran fine actually. The pistons don't have any of that on them, normal flat black in color. I will be cleaning them starting tomorrow and see where it goes from there. Now you suggested the die grinder with a wire brush? Wouldn't that score the piston or was this for the block itself?

disassemble the heads and drop 'em off at the machine shop for hot tanking. $40 later you'll have something amazingly clean. (my shop bead blasted mine too, flat out gorgeous.)

I hear a scotchbrite pad on a roloc disc in a die grinder works well for block deck and piston top cleaning. Wire brush on the pistons is ok, just be careful, I wouldn't use power tools, as you remove piston material too fast. use engine cleaner and whatnot, and go to town. If you can, polish your piston tops when you're done.

Well I don't really care that much about these heads, lol! They are ported and what not and remember, it's still just a 305. Most of money is being spent on the new 383. But anyway, I'll be digging into the cleaning part once the good weather comes back. Thanks for the replies.

Yeah, I would have them hot tanked. It isn't that expensive and they look really good too. Plus you may find some hidden cracks or other problems you may not have found otherwise.
