I'm Concerned

Ill be re-assembling my engine within the next two weeks. I have been told by a few people that what im doing is going to blow my engine up.

350 bored 30 thousandths over.
performer rpm intake
garbage stock q-jet
comp cams xe262:
"218 intake
224 ex 50

462 lift
469 ex

110 lobe seperation"

new lifters/timing chain.
stock heads with gasket matched intakes.

I have been told by a couple people that im building my top half way too much, and im going to be putting too much stress on the bottom. But my boss, who use to do marine/auto repair says that Ill be fine. I want to trust my boss's opinion but I also dont want to not take into consideration what other people tell me. So will I get away with not blowing the engine? or am I screwed running it like this.

You're top end is very mild, probably good for 5K-5.5K RPM's, depending on the head work.

You are not over cammed, even for a factory bottom end.

What was the reasoning that you would "blow it up"?

there reasoning is that I'll be putting too much stress on the bottom end and I need to replace my bearings/rings pistons/rods otherwise somethings going to break in the block.

Maybe its because of the fact that yes, I am putting on bolt ons, but mild ones, but the observing people just see it as a power adder and think that ill be stressing my bottom end.

My neighbor is one of the people who says I need to rebuild the bottom end, but hes not even a mechanic.

I just wanted to double check, incase I was wrong.

thanks

Looks like you don't have a stock engine anyway, so I don't see a problem unless you've got an excessive amount of miles on it without doing a rebuild.

I forgot to mention the engine was originally out of a 79 vette, I know that makes no difference but it was in my friends family the whole time. My friend patts uncle took the engine out of the vette and put a big block in. He took the 350, rebuilt it, and bored it out. They put it in a truck *dont remember what kind* and used it as a plow truck. After that they ended up putting it into an 87 blazer. That blazer was my friend patts. Its transmission cooler line leaked and he killed his transmission. Im using the heads/intake/carb/distro that was on my old engine. I bought a new cam because when I took the old one out of the "new" engine, one of the lobes was flat. Thats the only bad thing I found wrong with the engine. Its a 4 bolt main block too, so im not really worried about blowing it up.

---

I have a 700r4 with a shift kit.

I know someone who has a 4 barrel holley double pump carb for sale for a 150 bucks. I havent picked it up yet but I plan on doing so.

Ive got headers.. I dont know, my old engine was quick. I just cant wait to get it running, it will be awesome.

Anyone have a ballpark figure for as to how many horse power I have? I'm currious, I have no idea.

At a local weekend trade show kinda thing near me, I bought a die cast replica of an 82 camaro. It was only 10 bucks too. Problem is, is that they didnt have any more but I told them to pick a bunch up if they do, Ill let people know if I hear anything about it, I go there pretty much every friday.

Thats pretty much the same as mine - old '74 355 2-bolt 'police' motor, stock crank+rods probably original, with a Crane 214/224 mid 0.4's lift (0.440/0.469 or some such, cant remember), dominator intake, holley 650 pos smog carb - not excessively quick but is pulling happily at 5k. Daily driver plus occasional fun - 20000 miles since I've had it, then 3000 after the cam change to the Crane, shows no signs of blowing up yet, not even a little bit... pretty mild top end.
